Acne doesn’t care if you’re a teenager, a new mum, or stressed out at work and it always seems to appear right before a big event. And while there are more skincare products than ever promising overnight results, anyone who’s struggled with acne knows the truth: real, lasting change takes the right ingredients, the right support, and a plan that actually fits your skin.
At Maggie’s Clinic, we work with clients facing all kinds of breakouts from hormonal spots along the jawline to persistent blackheads or angry, inflamed acne that just won’t budge. If you feel like you’ve “tried everything,” you’re not alone. And you haven’t failed you just haven’t found what really works for you yet.
Let’s take a look at some of the ingredients we actually use and recommend in clinic. These aren’t trends or influencer favourites they’re proven, reliable, and chosen based on what your skin needs, not what’s trending online.
Azelaic Acid – The Quiet Hero
Azelaic acid isn’t flashy, but it’s one of our favourites. It’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and helps regulate keratin which can block pores and cause congestion. It’s also brilliant for fading post-acne pigmentation and calming redness, especially for clients dealing with rosacea as well as breakouts. Gentle but effective, it's suitable for most skin types and often ideal when other actives feel too harsh.
Retinoids – Not Just for Anti-Ageing
Often associated with anti-ageing, retinoids are also powerhouse ingredients for acne. They speed up skin cell turnover, prevent pores from clogging, and reduce inflammation helping breakouts fade and texture improve. But timing is everything: introducing them too quickly can lead to flaking and irritation. At Maggie’s Clinic, we usually start clients on lower strengths and increase gradually to build tolerance and protect the skin barrier.
Salicylic Acid – The Pore-Penetrating Pro
Salicylic acid is a go-to for a reason. This oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid gets deep into the pores, dissolves build-up, and reduces inflammation. It also provides gentle exfoliation to smooth skin. We often recommend it in cleansers for oily skin types or as a targeted treatment for stubborn blemishes.
Niacinamide – The Skin Balancer
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) doesn’t get the same spotlight as other actives, but it’s a quiet multitasker. It regulates oil production, strengthens the skin barrier, reduces redness, and improves tone and texture. It’s a brilliant support ingredient for clients using stronger treatments and helps maintain overall skin health.
Benzoyl Peroxide – Reliable and Effective
Benzoyl peroxide is still one of the most effective ingredients for inflamed or pustular acne. It works quickly to kill bacteria and reduce redness, but can be drying if overused. We tend to use it in balanced formulations, often combined with soothing ingredients. It’s not right for everyone, but when used strategically, it can deliver fast results.
What About ‘Natural’ or Trending Ingredients?
From tea tree oil to charcoal masks and the latest thing trending on TikTok we’ve seen it all. While some natural ingredients do have benefits, many just don’t have the science (or the stability) to work long-term. If it hasn’t been properly tested or formulated, it’s probably not helping your skin and may even be making things worse
So… What Does Work?
Treating acne isn’t about throwing ten products at your face and hoping for the best. It’s about understanding your skin, your triggers, your lifestyle and building a routine that supports your skin now, not just what you saw online.
At Maggie’s Clinic, every acne treatment plan starts with a consultation. We look at what’s going on with your skin, talk through your history, and build something that actually works for you. Sometimes that means tweaking your skincare. Sometimes it means adding treatments like peels or LED therapy. Sometimes we’ll even work alongside your GP or dermatologist if needed.
The goal is simple: skin that’s calmer, clearer, and stronger and for you to feel confident in it.
